How to Sell a Website
Selling a website is a simple way to make money from your online asset and focus on other projects in the future.
I sold my very first financial blog for a $XX,XXX sum over the course of 8 weeks and learned a lot about selling websites as a result.
I'll share everything I learned throughout the process so you can maximize your profits and avoid some of the mistakes I made.
List Your Website For Sale
I listed my website for sale on Flippa.com because it's one of the largest marketplaces for buying and selling websites online. You can also try these Flippa alternatives to sell your website:
- eBay
- WebsiteFlippers
- NamePros
Create an Attractive Listing
Flippa allows you to create a paid listing to sell your website faster so I provided as much detail as possible to attract potential buyers.
Fill out the entire website description field and upload lots of screenshots about your website's traffic and income.
Set a Fixed Price
I prefer setting a fixed price rather than the auction format so I can control how much I get for my website.
Most websites are valued at around 36x monthly income or 3x annual revenue on marketplaces like Flippa.
For example, if your website makes $500 per month in profit then it's worth around $18,000 to prospective buyers.
Talk to Potential Buyers
If you list a profitable website with some domain authority then you'll receive plenty of reasonable offers. I spent time chatting with buyers over the course of 8 weeks to find the best possible selling price.
Accept Bitcoin as Payment
I suggest accepting Bitcoin as payment to avoid paying the 10% Flippa closing sale fee. You'll save money by accepting BTC because the buyer can pay you directly without using the Flippa escrow service.
Transfer The Website to the Buyer After Payment
Once you received the full payment, you can begin the process of transferring over everything to the buyer including:
- Domain name
- Website hosting account
- Youtube account
- Email list
- X (aka Twitter) account
- Other social media accounts
Give the buyer access to all of the social media accounts by providing the usernames and passwords to everything.
