What is Gumroad?

Gumroad is an online platform that makes it easy for creators to sell digital and physical products directly to their audience.

Writers, artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs use it to offer ebooks, courses, memberships, templates, software, and more—without needing a complicated online store.

Gumroad handles payments, file delivery, and even subscription billing, so creators can focus on making and marketing their work.

It’s popular because it’s simple to set up, doesn’t require coding, and allows creators to start selling in just a few minutes.

How Much Money Can You Make Selling on Gumroad?

Smaller creators can earn $200 to $1,000 with a simple product on Gumroad as long as you have an existing audience.

The bigger your audience, the more money you can make. Big Youtubers earn millions of dollars selling digital products to their followers with pretty high conversion rates.

Thomas Frank, a Notion Youtuber, earned over $1 million selling Notion productivity templates on Gumroad via his Youtube channel.

His Notion templates are evergreen and timeless so he earns lots of money even when he doesn't upload to social media often.

My goal is to replace my monthly salary and earn at least $5,000 per month selling on Gumroad.

$5,000 USD isn't life changing money for a lot of people but it's more than enough to live a decent life in America or like a king overseas.

Driving Traffic to Your Gumroad Store

You need consistent traffic to your Gumroad store to make money on autopilot. Traffic can come from many different sources but convert at much different rates. Take a look at my Gumroad sales referral data to understand what I mean.

Here's a list of the best ways to drive traffic to your Gumroad digital product:

Google Search: Optimize your website or blog to drive traffic from organic search queries in Google. You could start a WordPress blog and write articles on highly searched topics related to your Gumroad product.
Youtube: My #1 traffic source for sales is Youtube. I recommend my digital product at the beginning of each video plus I link to it within the description and as a pinned comment. My Youtube conversion rate is good because my Youtube subscribers enjoy my free content and trust my advice. Video converts best so start uploading videos to Youtube if you are struggling to drive traffic to your Gumroad product page.
Instagram: Another free traffic source by linking to your Gumroad store within your IG profile
X (Formerly Twitter): Highly targeted traffic that can be directed to your digital products on your main X profile page. I recommend pining a post about your product at the top of your X profile to maximize impressions and clicks.
Email List: Collect email addresses using Kit to follow up with potential customers. Offer a free Ebook or gift using a squeeze capture page. Email blasts provide lots of quick sales if you follow up with your email list and build a connection.

Making Sales

I started out with just 1 single digital Ebook PDF guide priced at $39. The PDF guide is only 13 pages long but it's filled with very helpful information.

Pricing your digital product is really important. You don't want to charge too little because it makes your product seem less valuable.

Start off with a price between $10 to $40 as a good sweet spot. You can set the price depending on the demographics of your audience, their average annual income, and the perceived value of your product.

My overall conversion rate is 5% with 100% of my sales coming from Youtube referral traffic.

I uploaded an image to the Gumroad product description to build trust and drive more sales. Visual aids can help lift conversion rates on Ebooks and other digital products a lot.

Gumroad Fees for Sellers

Gumroad fees are brutal! They charge some of the highest fees in the industry for online sellers.

Gumroad fees are broken down into:

10% + $0.50 fee
Sales Tax
Credit Card Processing (2.9% + $0.30)
Paypal Fees

For every sale of my $39 Ebook, I receive $33.17 in total net income per digital product sold. Gumroad takes $5.83 in fees per sale or 15%.

I'm keeping 85% of my total revenue as net profit while Gumroad gets the remaining 15%. There are cheaper Gumroad alternatives you can try if you want to reduce your fees.

Getting Paid

Gumroad pays weekly on every Friday at the end of the business week.

Whenever you make a sale, Gumroad lists your next upcoming Payout within your dashboard.

Gumroad pays seller two different ways:

Bank Transfer
Paypal

You must wait 2 weeks at first to receive your first Gumroad payout when you make your first batch of sales. After that, you can become eligible for weekly or daily payouts.

Handling Negative Reviews

Sometimes you will receive a 1 or 2 star review from a customer who didn't like your product. These negative reviews appear on your product page and can hurt your conversion rates.

Gumroad allows you to issue a refund and remove any negative ratings or reviews from your product page.

Once done, the refunded amount will be deducted from your next upcoming Gumroad payout.
