Ankle Circles: The Simple Mobility Exercise I Use Before Training
I've been paying more attention to mobility as I've gotten deeper into my training. When you're lifting heavy, sprinting, and doing explosive movements, the small joints matter more than you might think.
One exercise I've started incorporating is ankle circles.
They're incredibly simple. But sometimes the simplest exercises are the easiest to actually do consistently.
What Are Ankle Circles?
Ankle circles are exactly what they sound like: you rotate your ankle slowly in a circular motion.
I usually do them before training to get my ankles moving before I start lifting or sprinting.
You don't need equipment. You can do them standing, sitting, or even lying down.
How I Do Them
I keep the movement controlled and make circles with my foot.
I do about 10–20 circles in one direction, then reverse direction and repeat.
Then I switch to the other ankle.
That's it.
I'm not trying to force my ankle into an enormous circle. The goal is simply to move through a comfortable range of motion and get the joint ready for activity.
Why I Like Ankle Circles
The biggest reason I like them is convenience.
I can do them almost anywhere, and they take less than a couple of minutes.
Before running, I want my entire lower body ready to move—not just my muscles. My ankles are involved every time my foot hits the ground, so it makes sense to spend a little time getting them moving.
They're also useful before exercises like squats, where ankle movement can affect how comfortably you get into position.
Ankle Mobility Matters
It's easy to focus on the big movements when you're training.
Squats. Deadlifts. Sprints. Jumps.
But those movements depend on smaller joints working properly.
Your ankles have to move, stabilize, and help transfer force every time you run or jump. That's why I don't think mobility should be something you only think about when you have a problem.
I'd rather spend a minute keeping my joints moving than wait until they become noticeably stiff.
Keep It Simple
You don't need a 30-minute mobility routine.
Sometimes I'll just do ankle circles before training and move on to my actual workout.
10–20 circles each direction. Both ankles. A couple of minutes.
That's easy enough to do consistently.
And consistency is what makes simple exercises useful.
For me, ankle circles are one of those small things that don't take much time but help me feel more prepared before I train.
